What this programme covers

This programme brings together director role responsibility, legal duty and whole-entity leadership. Across three
consecutive days, you will build a practical understanding of how directors lead and protect trade, how decisions
should be framed and evidenced, and how to apply a governance mindset within the realities of business.

Day-by-day outline

Day 1 – Director role responsibilities and duty

Explore what changes at director level, including the director role as a business architect, the organisation
as a system, and the interfaces and interplays that influence performance and outcomes.

Day 2 – Statutory and legal responsibilities of directors and boards

Understand UK Company Law duties, director liability and the legal context of trade. Apply practical
frameworks across B2B and B2C trading contexts, including workplace legislation responsibilities.

Day 3 – Whole entity leadership and trade

Develop a sustainable view of leadership, integrity and culture. Connect commercial sustainability, authentic
leadership, and organisational wellbeing to long-term customer and business outcomes.

Who this is particularly useful for

  • New-to-role directors wanting to formalise their understanding of the role
  • Senior leaders moving into directorship who need clarity on obligations and governance
  • Business-unit or divisional directors broadening into whole-business responsibility
  • SME directors and owner-directors strengthening governance for growth and continuity

Case studies

Earlsdon Technology – Business succession planning

Ahead of a planned management buy-out, the MD-designate already had some board experience but wanted to
formalise his training before taking up post as Managing Director. The 3-day programme instilled the knowledge,
confidence, skills and practical know-how to operate at MD level in the context of the whole business – not just
through his previous lens as Head of Production.

By the end of the programme, he was able to hold the responsibility and framework of the business in both
trading and legal contexts, and understand the relationship between these when leading and growing the business
for long-term economic success.

Scott Bader – Board-level tenure and continuity

The employee-owned company had a board-tenure policy of 2-3 years. Over a seven-year period, more than 30
new-to-role directors attended a client-adapted in-house version of the programme.

Each newly formed director completed a ‘confidence in their competence’ process at the end of every programme,
helping ensure newly appointed board members could approach their role equipped with the knowledge and skills
required to succeed.

FAQs

Who is this for – and who is it not for?

This programme is for newly appointed directors and those preparing to step into a director role within the
next 12 months, including individuals in their first year who want to formalise their understanding of
director responsibility, duty and whole-business leadership.

It is not designed as an advanced refresher for highly experienced directors who already have established
board tenure and are seeking specialist updates or technical deep-dives.

Is it relevant for owner-directors?

Yes. Owner-directors often carry both leadership and governance responsibilities. The programme helps to
strengthen director-level decision making, risk awareness, and the disciplines that support sustainable trading
and long-term economic success, particularly as the business grows or professionalises its board.

What does certificated mean and how is it assessed?

Certificated means you receive a certificate of completion based on your full participation across the three
days and your ability to demonstrate practical understanding and application. Assessment is grounded in
real-world scenarios, discussion and reflection rather than exams – focused on how you interpret director
responsibilities and apply the learning to your role and context.

What will I be able to do differently after Day 1, Day 2 and Day 3?

After Day 1, you will be clearer on what changes at director level and how to hold a
whole-organisation perspective, rather than operating through a functional lens.

After Day 2, you will better understand director duties, liabilities and the legal context of
trade, and how to approach decisions with appropriate governance discipline.

After Day 3, you will be able to connect leadership, integrity, culture and commercial
sustainability into a practical model you can apply in board conversations and day-to-day leadership.

Can it be delivered in-house?

Yes. An in-house, client-adapted version is available for organisations developing multiple directors or
boards, and can be shaped around your governance context, sector and trading realities.

What is the guarantee and how does it work?

The programme comes with a 100% outcome guarantee. If you cannot confidently apply the learning in a way that
adds more value than the investment, you can repeat the module or receive a refund at equivalent value.
